An object's linetype can be changed in three different ways:

If an object's linetype is set to BYLAYER, move it to another layers with a different linetype, the object will acquire the linetype of the new layer.
Choose another linetypes for layer, all objects with a BYLAYER linetype on this layer will be automatically updated.
Choose a specific linetype for the single object overriding the layer's linetype. You can do that for each single object on the layer.
